Nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other long-term care centers have a responsibility to provide residents with a high level of care. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. In the U.S., widespread nursing home abuse and neglect affects thousands of elderly individuals each year.

According to numerous extensive studies, anywhere from one-third to nearly half of all nursing home residents have experienced some form of abuse or neglect by caregivers.

What Is Nursing Home Abuse?

“Nursing home abuse” is a catchall term used to refer to all types of elder abuse and mistreatment.

This includes:

  • Neglect
  • Physical abuse
  • Mental/emotional abuse
  • Sexual abuse and assault
  • Financial exploitation

While the term nursing home abuse certainly includes acts of abuse and neglect that occur in residential nursing homes, it also refers to any misconduct carried out by caregivers—including individuals and facilities—against seniors.

Signs of Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect

If you have an elderly loved one residing in a nursing home or similar facility, it is important that you know the signs of nursing home abuse and neglect.

Often, seniors are unable or unwilling to speak up about what they are going through; some may not even realize that what they are experiencing constitutes abuse. When you are aware of the signs, you can take immediate action at the first indication that something is wrong.

Some of the most common signs of nursing home abuse and neglect include:

  • Unexplained injuries, such as bruises or scratches
  • Fall-related injuries, including broken bones
  • Untreated bedsores, or pressure ulcers
  • Bed injuries, such as asphyxiation
  • Unexplained death
  • Infections
  • Malnutrition and/or dehydration
  • Sudden weight loss or gain
  • Over- or under-medication/medication errors
  • Sexual injuries
  • Sexually transmitted infections/diseases (STIs/STDs)
  • Unusual changes in mood or behavior
  • Bouts of crying or apparent fear in the presence of a caregiver
  • Unusual behavior, such as mumbling, sucking a thumb, or rocking back and forth
  • Changes in the elderly individual’s financial situation
  • Unexplained withdrawals from bank accounts
  • Changes to a will, trust, power of attorney, health care directive, or similar document
  • Elopement and/or wandering
  • Irritability, anxiety, depression, or aggression

Additionally, general uncleanliness or lack of sanitary conditions can indicate that a nursing home is not providing adequate care for its residents. Similarly, a poor staff-to-resident ratio or lack of proper medical care are also red flags that something is not right.

How to Report Nursing Home Abuse in Utah

If you have any reason to believe that you, your loved one, or another elderly individual is being mistreated, it is important that you take immediate action. If anyone is in imminent danger, call 911 and have the individual removed from the situation if possible. In all other cases, you can report the abuse to the appropriate authorities.

There are several ways to report nursing home abuse in Utah:

  • Contact local law enforcement
  • Alert the nursing home or facility (for cases involving a single caregiver)
  • Call the elder abuse hotline at (800) 371-7897
  • Contact Utah Adult Protective Services at (801) 538-3567 or report suspected abuse online here
  • Contact the long-term care ombudsman in your area; click here to learn more

In addition to reporting the abuse or suspected mistreatment to the proper authorities, you should also reach out to an experienced personal injury attorney who can help you protect your rights. An attorney can help you seek justice, as well as fair compensation for your physical damages, emotional distress, and financial losses.
